Kota Kinabalu, formerly known as Jesselton, is the capital of the state of Sabah in East Malaysia. It’s also the capital of Sabah’s West Coast Division. The city sits on the northwest coast of Borneo, facing the South China Sea. Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park lies to the west, while Mount Kinabalu – which gives the city its name – is located to the east. MAIN TOURIST ATTRACTIONS • Atkinson Clock Tower • Signal Hill Observatory • The Green Connection Aquarium – the best place to see Borneo’s aquatic wildlife without leaving the city • Tanjung Aru Beach – Kota Kinabalu’s most popular beach • Likas Bay Beach • Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park – a group of five islands (Gaya, Manukan, Sapi, Sulug and Mamutik) just off the city’s coast • Double Six Monument – a memorial at the site of the 1976 plane crash that killed the state chief minister Tun Fuad Stephens and other members of the state cabinet • The northern coast of Kota Kinabalu has unspoilt, scenic coastal landscapes including Karambunai and Dalit Beach; behind these beaches is a lagoon-like estuary formed by the Mengkabong and Salut rivers.
